This is seriously one of my all time favorite meals! Growing up my aunt would make these for family gatherings and was one I would request almost every year for my birthday. Making these always brings back great memories.
Another reason why I love these is the fact that everyone in my family loves them. YES…the kids love these! I usually make meatballs for them (omit the cabbage) and then sneak in a few pieces of cabbage when I cut theirs up. What they can’t see won’t cause a fight.
If you’re dairy free this is easy to alter, just take out the cheese and voila. Want to freeze for later…this is your meal. Want to make as an easy “take to a friend” meal…yes that too! I’ve never met someone who said they didn’t like them, even my sister who hates onions.
Our favorite is to make mashed potatoes and mix it in with the cut up cabbage rolls. This is the only way my kids will eat it, but they will have two helpings so mama and daddy are happy.
Tip: Once you’ve boiled the cabbage make sure to cut a deep circle around the stem of the cabbage otherwise the cabbage leaves may rip in half.
Enjoy, and I hope this becomes a favorite meal for your family as well.
